Thank you very much for your comments.

Beautiful and sad.

There is a somewhat eerie feeling that this picture evokes in me. Partly because of the rather direct look of the eyes, but also because of the white skin tone. Although I have never seen a corpse, I relate the pale palor to death and it makes me wonder, "Was the flyer too late, is the child already dead?" I think that, coupled with the expression, is what gives this piece its particular emotional effect (subject matter aside). However, like my signature says, I'm not an art critic :)

~blueelf007: My loyal follower. Incidentally, a funny guy too.
There are two important elements that contribute to the "look" of these portraits. One is the choice of photo used by the families to best represent their own child. Some photos are poorly lit, out of focus, awkward. Others are static mug-shots.

The other factor is me. While all of these missing child portraits were painted from postage stamp sized monochrome images, when I hold them in my hand, some images on the mailers "suggest" certain color interpretations. Some suggest a monumental canvas, while others suggest an intimate scale.

Occasionally a family of a child whom I have painted has heard of what I do, and they comment that I have "captured the essence " of their child. Occasionally (through efforts by the National center for Missing and Exploited Children in North America, I have met children whom I have painted that were since safely recovered. I marvel at these meetings, being able to see the real child, alive before me.

The style you have used for this one reminds me of very early impressionist paintings. The texture is fantastic.

There is so much depth to your work. You bring out so much detail from those little black and white images.

And then there is the overwhelming mood of the peice.

Moody. Heartbreaking. Tragic. Sad.

Pictures taken spur-of-the-moment, with a tiny hint of human soul, and a flicker of what these children once were... it's crushing.

Very moving selection. Excellent.
Thank you for your thoughtful and moving words about these missing child paintings. You have the soul of an artist, my friend.
