Missing Child Portrait 41

Description

Portrait of a missing girl, inspired by the tiny black and white image printed on a disposable flier.

I thought she deserves to be painted boldly and directly, in color.

I used real oil, and a two-inch house-painter's brush.

This is, in my opinion, your best work so far. There are several reasons why I make this assertion, and I will try to outline them.

First, I love the colouring. I quite enjoy your more interpretive-coloured pieces, but something about using more usual colours simply stands out in this piece. You still managed to work in pinks and blues and greens, but the subtlety is where this piece really shines. I especially like how her eyes are not exactly the same colour.

Second, the expression is perfect. She looks defiant; immortalized in time. It is almost as though we are looking at a spirit of her that knows what has happened to her but appears in her form before the tragedy, if that makes any sense. The lighting on her face really helps with this, as does the ethereal nature of the background.

The only part of this piece that I do not absolutely love is the top of her head, but, for all I know, that may very well be what the original photograph portrayed. Overall, this is one of the best pieces I have seen in awhile, and certainly the best done in traditional painting. Bravo.
