Artist's Comments

Portrait of a missing boy.

Inspired by a 1-inch square black and white photo printed on a disposable mailer.

Oil paint and palette knife.

I have become so enamored by the compulsion to make my paint like rivers of light, like veins of crimson, like shards of stained glass.

Should a subject be painted the way it looks to our eyes, or the way it feels in our stomach?

And what sounds can color and texture suggest? What is the sound of this portrait?

And where is this child who inspired it?

This is truly a nice piece of art

The brushstrokes alone are nothing short of the work of a virtuoso; exceptional, deeply compelling work...

he looks like a friend of mine, which is quite creepy.

i like your colours. they're so bold and dark =) and i love how expressive his eyes are... you were able to make large irises (i think they're called irises, i don't remember my biology days) and not make them alienated.

=)

Awesome.
Whenever I see your new work I never know if I'll be more inspired by your technique or your message.
This time it's the color choices that stand out most.
It's electric.

Thank you , John.

I was just looking at your beautiful galleries, and they reminded me that, as artists, there is an amount of theater and drama that can go into what we mean to communicate.

I think I am learning to commit to color to provoke a response. It it no longer random to me, but I can steer it to where I want it to go.

At the same time, I am becoming more and more influenced by sensations that are removed from optical reality...

And I am allowing myself to go there.

The eyes were huge in the beginning. They look huge in the child's photo, but I slowly carved them down to this point.

Any smaller would have been ineffective, i thought.

here, they are just on the edge...
