Artist's Comments

A missing child, painted with sticks and knives.

Inspired by the blurred image printed on a disposable "Have you seen me?" mailer.

What is the proper way to paint a missing child? How much technical showmanship? How much self-expression?

Is it possible, in the silence of the studio, to hear and reach out to the actual child, in a far away unknown situation?

i am beginning to realize i am most attracted to the ones i cannot focus on. they feel like ghosts to me, some people believe they exist, some people don't.
do you decide the clarity in painting or do you react to the blurriness of the photo?
:iconjohnpaulthornton:
Mostly the clarity of the photo suggests the style and feel of the painting. Some are quite complicated and take so long. Some happen right away.

The softer missing children portraits I have posted on DA are getting more comments and response.

Maybe they evoke more empathy? Less harsh?

His eyes are what get me in this one - hauntingly captivating.

i agree with what th person said in th other comment...the more blurred ones, seem to just have, perhaps just the contrast of the eye colour, but this intensity within the eyes of th child that just makes it stand out...it's beautiful, it really is ^ ^
